This tutorial will teach you how to remove the white fringe to get the result above. Like all my other tutorials it uses Ps Elements 4.0.
The first step is to pick your image, right click and copy it. Go into photoshop and paste it in. Edit Paste.
I have prepared a nice dark blue background so you can tell if there are white pixels remaining when we are done.

First we will select the nasty background, holding down shift to add to the selection. Zoom in to select the little nooks and crannies. Now press delete to get rid of most of it.
So now we're left with the fringe. Click to the left of your image and you've got everything but the subject select. Now go Select, Inverse. Now only the subject is selected.
Then Select, Modify, Contract, by 1px. Now the white ugly fringe is not selected, but we can't delete it because we'd delete some of the black border as well.
I've created a new layer beneath the subject layer. Select it. My foreground color is white. I select my paint bucket tool and fill my selection.
One more step: Select the subject layer and set its mode under the layer's menu to Darken.
And thats it. Usually this works pretty well. The end.
